Tenun Ikat of Sumba Proposed To Be The World's Heritage



Government of Indonesia, via Education and Culture Ministry planning to propose Tenun
Ikat Sumba to be a formless world's heritage to UNESCO in 2013.

It have been revealed by Deputy Minister of Education and Culture in the field of culture, Wiendu Nuryanti, Monday (16/04/2012) in Jakarta.

Wiendu explained that the chosen of tenun ikat Sumba which have been proposed to UNESCO, because of this woven accepted as a representative in waving tradition of Indonesia.


In addition to that, tenun ikat Sumba also have a uniqueness to its processing, which taking so much time because it contains high spiritual matters and its colouring using natural material.


"Thats why, some reasons are chosen to propose this woven as a formless world's heritage to UNESCO," said Windu.


The other consideration of this proposal, is the big chance of UNESCO to accept it.


By this proposal, also excepted it could prevent the extinction of tenun ikat Sumba, as well to save, protect, develop and give some benefit in the matter of income of local peoples.


As for information, this woven developed by ethnic group in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) and the other major region in Indonesia.


Waving becomes an important thing to society of NTT, because generally could functioned as complement in daily fasion, ritual ceremony, dowry, gift to honored guest or in funeral ceremony.


In addition of that, waving also as an hereditary household activity, society and economy.


Majority of weaver are women in every nuclear family, but it could be men if no female children int the family.


In the transmision mechanism of weaving knowledge, the main role held by women, they are grandmothers of mothers in every clan's nuclear family.
