Wedang Coro Still Preserved by The Undaan Society





Wedang Coro is one of traditional beverages in Kudus, Central Java, still preserved by the society of Undaan Tengah village, sub-district Undaan. That drinking connected with farming tradition in Kudus.


It usually could find in the stalls nearby farming area in Undaan Tengah. The location at about 1 km from village hall of Undaan Tengah.

Abdul Jalil (65), the owner of the stall, said that the beverage made from gingger, palm sugar, gaul (slices of fried coconut), pepper, lemongrass, rice flour and salt. Wedang Coro is cream coloured, more thicken like porridge and tastes sweet with a little hot.



"We have the recipe hereditary, from the age of 'mak kuno' (ancestors)" said him.


Jalil added, its price is pretty cheap, it's about Rp. 2.000 a glass. Usually drinks after harvest and planting season in rainy days.


Darwoto (50), farmer from Undaan Tengah village, said that beverage can warm our body. In addition, the farmer believe that Wedang Coro could eliminate fatigue.


"We call it Wedang Coro because it served with coro (Javanese language) or 'how to' like this," said him.
